break even

ok... as of about noon on saturday, or so.. i broke even.. yay me.. well, actually, was 7 bucks shy... but lets not quibble...

so, i got all my money back, i got a much bettre understanding of the game, i got a new respect for less than stellar players...

time for a break.... think i will just play the freeroll at UB and see how much free money i can garner......

my allergies are kicking my ass, which is a big factor in my decision to take a break....

Turn around

Quit note... got my roll back up to more than dbl the free money they gave me..

with this hand, which, I'm not proud of my all-in, but they had been pretty easy bout letting me take the steals, I guess they both had had enuff of me... pretty silly how the hand turned out... 50 bucks to me tho.. :)

( I think I'm like $75.00 from getting my initial deposits back, counting PP and UB )

Pretty stoked I am I am.

Allergies suck..

I don't feel much like posting, but I promised myself I would keep this thing relatively up to date... and also, couple interesting things happened since my last post that I will forget about if I don't write it down...

Thanksgiving dinner with my family was great, except, I was so out of it due to the drugs for the allergies... that I was not the best guest.... they were all sympathetic tho.... would have liked to enjoy the food with out the sinus pain or the chest congestion....

I had taken the 26 dollars or so Party kindly gave me and doubled it up rather quick.. then I didn't play much due to being under the weather.. but, I started jonesing, and even tho I knew bettre to play while not 100%, I did anyway... I lost all but 9 dollars playing a ring game... and really didn't care that much.. heh.. I then joined a 5+1 sng and managed to get second, which took my roll up to 18 dollars... I don't recall how many I played or which places I got, but, I was once again down to 9 dollars or so, and then this happened:

( When he checked after me after the flop, I called him a butt whole, outloud )

And that pretty much did it.. couple hands latre, I won the tourney and now the roll is at around 28 bucks... right pretty much where it was when I decided to quit and then they bribed me back with free money...

The other thing is.. I had 50 bucks lying around.. don't ask.. have no idea where it came from...just found it in a pair of pants i have not worn in awhile... anyway.. I stuck it in Ultimate Bet, got 10 bonus dollars. decided to start working it off.. had 1.25 bonus dollars on there some how.. not sure.. anyway...starting playing a ring game, was limit, but I didn't know that till about the 3rd hand.. but, I stayed, cuz, I won the first three hands. Turns out, Im a half way decent limit HE player..or players at UB just suck.... prolly a combo of the two. Played about an hour, got 1 dollar of my bonus, then joined a 1 dollar entry MTT, for the heck of it.. am currently playing in that right now... doing fairly well... think there was 315 entries... about 200 left, im in the top 50... 40 places pay....oh, I did 1 rebuy and 1 addon, so, ive 3 bucks invested in this tourney.. woo hoo..

prolly work my bonus off, get my money out, put it at another site, work bonus off.. wash, rinse, repeat... maybe get ahead a lil.....

peace

Interesting development with my bank roll..

Interesting to me anyway.... previously i stated how i had quit party poker but went back since they apologized and gave me some cash...

well, today after work, I took my 26 bucks, or 25 of it anyway, to a .25/.50 6 player ring game and promptly won 6 bucks.. and the table broke up.. so, I stopped playing for a bit, and decided i should join the 5 dollar buy in MTT, which I just did, and is currently early in round 1. while i was waiting for it to begin, i playing couple more ring game tables and managed to get 6 dollars ahead again.. so, i quit and started trying to figure out why my digital camera has quit working properly.. which involved some emails with hp.com tech support.. while i was waiting on email, i started another ring game and this is the interesting part.. i really was not paying attention, cuz now i had hp on the phone and was messing with the camera and anyway, i just left that game and finished up with the camera, which still isn't working...

so, now, done with camera, i check my balance and it is at 46. so that along with the 6 dollars for the MTT is 52 dollars. i doubled up the 26 dollars PP gave me... without even trying... or at least not trying very hard....

now need to do well in this MTT and also get my camera working possible good news is, they are talking about replacing it.. if the information they have for me is up to date.... i have no idea if they have any information for me.. the camera is a gift and i prolly did not register it... note to all.. send in those warranty cards!!!!!

Party on!

Well.. after a couple more emails from Party, and to them from me... I will be going back...

They acknowledged that an error in their software is possible and they refunded me the $1.00 entry fee. They also gave me $25.00, actual dollars, not bonus dollars.. explaining that it would be/is the amount I would have gotten if I had taken advantage of the bonus when I first deposited money. Very Kind and Generous of them, and totally unnecessary, but, who am I to turn down free(ish) money, or food.

i am $175.00 from my goal of $400, and I have a serious hole in my game, because the last two days have been horrible...

Going outta town today, for the day, to visit some friends...not sure what time I will be back tho, prolly not in time to play any card.... this is probably a good thing...

Hope every one has a good weekend and good luck to everyone at the PokerGrub Classic....

so, i sent another lettre, explaining how i didnt appreciate being called a liar and cashed out...

I've never used that option.. I haven't even figured why it is even there.

bad day

at the poker tables..

i blew a chance to make it in the money in a $5+1 MTT, went all in with my 10's and got rivered by a club to give my nice opponent a flush.. would have been a nice double up.. should have left it alone and drifted into the low end cash pay offs.... ah well...

spent alot of time playing 5+1, but, didn't place in enuff to get ahead.. prolly played 15 or so and placed maybe in 5, and mostly 3rd..

Tried a PPIV 5 dollar buying sub qualifier dealy and got second in that, then proceeded to the qualifier with my free roll and busted out 6th.. again, being rivered... ah well..

Down 40 dollars from yesterday...... guess you can't win everyday... least not me.. least not yet.. heh...

day off seems appropiate....

When Lay Downs Pre Flop go bad

My new nemesis hand is J10.. suited or not... I'm pretty tight with this hand anyway..., but, on a whim, I decided to see a flop with it, if I could do so for cheap... course.. never hit my flop in the 3 or 4 odd times I actually got J10.. so, back to mucking it with lil regret... the next J10 I get, and muck, flop is JJ10. eat me.

Ofcourse, I've seen this happen over and over with any 2 cards... but for some reason, Mr. J10 really gets to me.. heh..

did alright last night.. yesterday, afterwork, I had promised to help a friend with and errand, but, I had to wait for them to call me, 'any minute', so, I really could not get involved in a SnG or MTT like I normally would.. so, I joined a 6 player .25/.50 game and for the next hour, like a crazy yo-yo, my stack went from $25.00 to 40.00, back to 25, zing! up to 40. got the call finally and my stack was at exactly $25.72. So, I'm up .72 cents for the day so far...

Got back from running the errand and decided to 'step-up' for at least one, $10.00 SnG. Played just the one table and actually finished 1st.. which was encouraging.. so I immediately bought into another one, and promptly lost... so I went to bed... apprx $29 ahead for the day, just 1 buckaroonie short of my daily goal.... I can live with that..

Woke up around 10 pm and suddenly remembered I was supposed to be at Cicks for their Friday qualifying tourneys.. so, I washed up real quick and headed north to play...

Not very many people there at clicks... the tourney director split us up amoung 5 tables... 6 at my table, and 3 of those had already qualified, so, i was actually only playing agaisnt 2 people.. and lucky for me... one is a maniac, least for the first couple rounds... and I knew he would eithre bust out, or take the other non qualifier out... so what did I do? First I had to decide how important it was for me to play the following Wednesday... how early do I have to get up next Thursday.. stuff like that.. and finally I decided I could play in the money tourney, so.. I folded, pretty much everything except AJs or bettre... I did have pocket 9's once on a BB and the flop gave me 2 more 9's.. no one wanted to play, I even checked to the river... got a lil with that.. couple blinds worth.. anyway.. sure enuff, the maniac had 3x's as many chips as the rest of us, took the other non qualifier all in, and rivered him.... took all of about 45 minutes of me sitting there folding and I was in... they commented that I could 'relax' now, since I was in.. I said, 'well, I guess you didn't notice, but I was pretty relaxed the whole time '

Left there and came home and had no desire to play poker, so, I didn't.. I did calculate exactly how much money I've invested/lost into Party.. and it doesn't look as bad as it did, say last week.

Total deposits 400.00
total withdraw 100.00
curr balance 130.00

( I should state that that 400 pretty much all went in all at the same time, one $50 deposit after another, within 2 hours time. I had got down to about 6.50 before I finally went to bed.. so, I've been working my way back up from $6.50, since about Nov 8th. )

so, another 170 or so to go to get my initial deposits back.. I think I can do that in a week..

( need to be less timid with J10, I know )

So so night

Didn't do as well in the SnG's tonight has I have been doing.. played 6 and only took two 3rd places... did horrible in the MTT, again...

I did double up from 27.00 to 54 in a ring game tho...blinded down to 50.00 and called it quits... I had pocket 8's and the flop was 5 5 5, the 4 callers checked, turn was J( i think ), check to me, I bet 3.00, fold, raise to 10.00, fold, then I go all in for 27 and some change.. he thinks a bit, and calls..... he had KQ.. I was not proud of pushing in...he had some outs, not to mention possibly having the 4th 5.., but, I figured, wth... I'm due another lesson anyway... turned out good for me..

started with $91, ended with $101. Not too bad... would have liked to have down bettre in the SnG's.. I suppose I just was not 'in the zone', or 'in the grove', or more likely, 'in the mood'. I feel that quitting when I did, is a positive step towards being a bettre poker player. I've read plenty where they say you shouldn't play drunk, tired, depressed, et al.. and well, I'm pretty tired again.. ( fricking work getting in the way of my poker again ).

Bit of a interesting debate going on over at Talking Poker, about the validity or such of mucking or not mucking pocket Ace's on the first hand of a MTT when there are 2 or 3 ALL INs before you. I find myself as I usually do, feeling I have intelligent thoughts to share, only lacking the ability to cleary express my thoughts from brain to type...it makes sense to me in my head, and I type it all out, read it, then wonder what the hell I am talking about...

Coats for Kids are looking for volunteers to help out this year on December 11 to pass out coats to families that can not otherwise afford them. Its a good organization and I helped out last year.. was alot of fun.. very rewarding... they also need help before that day, with collecting, sorting and such...

Well, that is it for now... blogging is fun, poker is fun... :)

Wednesday, November 17, 2004

Very tired

Had to play in a live tourney tonight, so did not get much time in at Party... only about 90 minutes, before I left for the tourney, which I busted out early, mainly cuz, well, I just didn't like being there....

Brought my bankroll from 90.00 to 124.00, in that 90 minutes... two SnG's, a 1st and a 2nd.. that was 28.00, and 6.00 more at a ring game, 9 player... which i feel more comfortable at then the 6 player tables... prolly cuz takes longer for the blinds to come around and i have more time to be patient and use discipline.

Want to play now, but, am pretty tired, and I did make my daily goal... so, must recite mantra. discipline, discipline, discipline

9 more days....

( shame on me, I logged on to party even tho I knew I shouldn't. played 6 player ring game for 5 minutes.. won 17 bucks. :) starting nodding off tho, thats how tired I am.. ) 8 and 1/2 more days...

Expanding

I can never think of a good title for any of these posts...

Anyway.. I signed up for the The Grublog Poker Classic II. I'm new to the Blog scene and figured it might be a good way to meet some of the folks that have been sharing and 'teaching' me about poker. Plus, might get me some traffic here... not that it matters, since last night, I realized I was pretty much just writing to myself anyway... heh...

I'll have to see what I have over on Paradise.. I know I have and account, but I've been playing exclusively at Party for last two months and I know not if I have cash anywhere else... will have to move some money around... would be cool to win alot on Party between now and the 21st.

I've cut down alot on my live play, since it is always just free tournaments with a really minimal prize at the end, for way to many hours of work. I look at it as time away from PartyPoker, or, time away from a chance to make money. BUT, I do miss the people that I have met since I started playing in those live tourneys... so, I still show up once a week or so, not so much to win, but to mingle and learn and try out new ideas and stuff. ( new ideas that are prolly old ideas to the multitude of better players than me )

I'm trying to be patient, not win 'it all' in one night, and being disciplined. As much as possible. I've failed to take my own advice in prolly all those $5+1 SnG's I lost last night, and I need to work on that.

Weather here in Austin is wet, humid, wet, warm, wet. Did I mention it was wet? Lots and lots and lots of rain these last few days.... West part of the county was advised not to travel this morning, due to flooding...

I'm not exactly doing this right

Ok, Once again, I did horrible in the daily 5+1 multi table.. at 4:15 CST or so, daily. Finished 1896. Yuck.

I first tried a 10+1 SnG, and finished 8th I think. So, like 20 minutes into my nightly poker hobby/job/escapade/endeavor, I'm already $17.00 down...

I then played eleven $5+1 SnG's... and finally finished with about 10 minutes at a .50/1.00 6 player max ring game. ( Won 6 bucks fairly quick then decided I was no longer in the mood for poker )

This all took a total of 3 hours... my finishing results for the SnG's are not that great, but, I'm ahead from yesterday.. so, I figure its time to call it:

Yesterday had 78.00
Today, 90.00

12 bucks, 3 hours, 4 bucks an hour. Course add in the fun factor, and it was well worth it.

11 games, 6 losses, 2 thirds, 2 seconds, 1 first.

Oh, great, I just noticed I didn't mark my results for two of the games. most likely losses.. not gonna do the math.

No notable hands to speak of... none that I remember anyway... got more flushes than usual, don't remember any straights, and won with TPTK quite a few times...

Maybe I should not start right when I get home from work.. or maybe I should just play one game at time, while in the big tourney...the bettre money is in the big tourney and I know I'm good enuff to finish in the money, I've done so 2 outta 5 times so far...

I played more aggressive with chip lead, than I usually do, that worked out pretty good.

My goal is 30 bucks a day, to get my 396 bucks back, then regroup, rethink, replan... and if I can do that, it would only be 10 more days...

i could prolly put another 10 games in tonight before bed, but I think if I see another A2o on the button, I might puke.

i can't believe I've actually kept this up to date, twice a day even.. every other blog i've tried to start lasted maybe 2 posts. Wish someone would read this tho.. lol

Peace

Wimped out

I actually lost some sleep last night... thinking about that set of Kings I mucked..... prolly and most likely, cuz I am a wimp.

On the river, me being first to act... and having a fairly decent hand... and having chips to bully with some.. I should have been the one to bet 250.. he eithre would have called ( most likely ), or raised ( possible ), or folded ( highly unlikely ). In two of the situations, the pot is mine.. he calls or folds. I know now that I was afraid that if I bet 200 or 250, he would raise me, and then I would really have to think since then I would have significant chips in the pot.. I did not want to be in that position, so I checked, hoping he would eithre bet small, or check. He played it right with his bet, which should have been my bet, and took the pot. I have his email now, so I plan to ask him what he would have done on the river had I played it different...

Other stuff..
I think I hurt my back, standing and bending for 2 hours last Sunday.. while volunteering for the Turkey Trot.

My new Plan

Well, I've decided to play 10 $5+1 SnG's per day/night along with the daily $5+1 multi table. At PartyPoker. I just finished my 10 for tonight and here are the results.... ( I did crappy in the big one, again, sigh )

Starting Bank, $46.00
10 Tourneys, <$66.00>
Ending Bank, $78.00

Placed less than 4th - 3 times
Placed 3rd - 3 times
Placed 2nd - 1 times
Placed 1st - 2 times
( hmm, either I only played nine, or I didn't keep as good as track as I thought )

A couple hands I would like to share, and I don't remember the details, even tho it was not that long ago....

Now, I lost that hand, but, didn't put a whole lot in the pot, considering my chip stack... I might have bet more on the flop, but he would have called for sure....I might have raised his bet at the turn, but I'm sure he would have called that too...had not a club turned up on the river, I would have pushed all in. Anyone reading this please feel free to comment on my play there.... I feel good about it..and ended up winning the tourney... and the guy turned out to be a really nice fellow from San Antonio..( I'm in Austin ).

Anyway, as I was mentioning earlier.. it took ALOT of discipline to muck that set of K's. I had to ask myself, what could beat it, other than the flush, and there were alot of possibilities.. AK,KQ,KJ are the obvious..I didn't put him with a 2, 4, or 7 ( altho, you never know ). I figured he had the flush.. and I mucked, reluctantly.

Yesterday

Lets see... yesterday.. I did some volunteer work for the folks that run the annual Turkey Trot. Spent 2 hours stuffing plastic bags with various different flyers and coupons. Was a blast. Met some great people.

After that went and played in the Party Poker $5+1 multi table tourney and did horrible. Finished like 1096. Totally disgusted with myself for playing so poorly, I proceeded to play some $5+1 SnG's. Played 6, two at a time. 2 seconds, 2 thirds, 2 bubbles. So, I came out ahead, a lil.

Poker Tracker.

Sigh. I want this. However, I promised myself I would not purchase it until my winnings totaled more than my initial deposit(s). Currently, my bankroll is at 46.00. I've put in a total of $394.00. So, I'm behind. I know I can get it back tho.. with discipline.

Discipline. My new mantra for poker. What does this mean. Simply put, it means mucking your pocket K's if there is an Ace on the board and a strong bet in front of you. They may look good, but, consider exactly what your gambling on. Most likely, your gambling on your chance to keep playing in the tournament. Better to muck now and keep playing, then to call the bet and wonder what the hell you were thinking, later.

Especially early on in the tourney. Makes no sense to gamble away a chance to place in the money in a tourney for a pot of 800 or so. Gamble being the key word here. Let them have you BB call. It will be alot cheaper for you in the long run.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying NOT to play your kings, I'm just saying don't risk you stack on Kings if you think you might be beat. I figure, if you think ur beat, your prolly are, and its better to bow out and keep playing.

This takes discipline. Lord knows I've held on to my K's and lost my stack to someone that went in with A2o and hit thier A on the river... Discipline. Can't lose it if you don't bet it. Basic stuff, I know. It's how I banked 4 outta 6 tourneys yesterday, and placed 13th Saturday.

I just wish I had learned this BEFORE I lost 350.00. :)

Here is that link I mentioned: Poker4Pets

Second Post

Well, since my last post, just yesterday... I've played in 4 online SnG's at party poker, 5+1, and 3 live tourneys at my local Clicks.......I won 3rd in two of the online tourneys, and lost the other two due to 'my cards not being quite good enuff'. I was very pleased with my play....and it 'appears', my cold streak is over, as today I played about 15 minutes at a ring table, 25 bucks, .25/.50 blinds, and took my 25 to 47, lickity split... so what did i do? I quit, and I started my laundry.. and I may iron some shirts..... well, I did sign up for the big multi table 5+1 buy in....and hopefully I will be in the money on that one, it starts in about 8 mins... I can iron and fold and play at the same time, me thinks..

as far as the live tourneys.. they were the 3 I mentioned in my last post, one at 7pm, 9pm, and then at 11pm... I was not overly concerned about qualifying for the final tourney next wednesday, as work prevents me from staying out too late during the week....so, i just tried to play the players, ie, tried to figure out what they might have, based on thier tells and thier bets and such.... to do this, I had to bet on hands I would not normally bet on... and as such.. I found that a 200 raise holding 52o is a fun thing to do... heh... long story short, I did alot of experimenting with reading the players and being more aggressive with hands i dont normally play, so, I did not qualify....per se.. turns out, since im a frequent poker player there, I sorta automatically qualified... go figure.. :) But it was fun learning.....and learn is what I did....

I dealt 60 hands while waiting for the 11pm tourney to start and in my own humble opinion, pre flop, maybe 6 were worth a crap.. this told me alot.. about starting hands....post flop, i would guess, half were playable....with a couple dominating hands..... what i learned is, that while I am getting a string a bad cards, most likely, everyone else is too, and when I get a marginal hand, i should pay to see the flop. Which is sumtin I am not used to doing.....

Well, my seat is ready and I have to check on my laundry... hope to update again tomorrow.......

Will try to include a link to a local charity event coming soon here......NL Holdem tourney..

First post

For my first lil post.. a brief history of how I started and where am I at today..

I first heard of Texas Holdem, prolly like alot of people, watching the movie, 'Rounders'... I thought it was a decent movie and did not really pay much attention to the card playing aspect of the movie.. shortly after that, I started watching Bravo's Celebrity Showdown, which did pique my interest in the game. I then signed up to Pacific Poker and Ultimatebet and played there for a couple weeks, play money only.. and after a few intial and humiliating losses, started winning pretty regularly. It quickly became boring... so, I did a search on the internet for local places that might be hosting tournaments and found that the local Clicks Billiards, did, and does, host a tournament.. you can qualify for the 'money game' during 1 of 3 tourneys every friday night.. they start at 7pm and each last about 2 hours. The 2 chip leaders from each table, qualify to play in the 'money game' the following Wednesday. I've qualified every week the last 3 months, except for once, where I learned that if your serious about poker, you should not drink, at all. The prize is 100 bucks for first place. I've taken it twice.. and always made it to the final table.

I learned playing with real people is different than playing with online people. I learned that playing tight/aggressive, ie, being patient, is the key to going far in a tourney, eithre live, or online.

Ok, towards the middle of October.. I went and took 50 dollars I had left from one of my tourney wins, and deposited into Party Poker. I had been playing there off and on with play money and winning pretty much top 3 in every SnG I played, it made me cocky. So, now with my real money in the pot, how much different could the 5+1 SnG's be? Well, alcohol and poker do not mix and niether does attitude(cockyiness) and poker mix. The 6 hours or so it took me to win that damn 50 bucks was gone in less than 30 minutes. So, do I logoff and wait to win another local tourney before I try the real money again? hell no! I deposit 55 bucks more, from my own money, ie, my money for groceries, gas, rent, et al. Why 55? cuz that would be 5 10+1 SnG's, of which I was certain of myself, since I was no longer cocky!!!!

To sum it up... I made my initial 50 dollars back and sent it back to my bank account...and have been hovering between 35 and 100 ever since.. til about 5 days ago. I had a really bad run of cards and just kept putting money into partypoker and now after five 50 dollar deposits, my bankroll is at 51.75. I am not discouraged. I was, and that is partly why I let myself do that. I lost it experimenting with ring games ( .50/1.00 ) and instead of quitting while I was ahead there, just tilted, big time.. tried to make it back with the SnG's, as i did before, and was way too emtionally challenged to be playing.... there were a few bad beats as well... my Kings got raised by the BB, I called. flop is 448 or such. I bet out turn and river, which are rags J7 I think and he flips 4 8. Now, I had a hard time not mucking those kings to rockets, but I had put him on AK or AQ, just by the way he had played.. and besides, i never mind losing KK vs AA. the idiot had 4 8, raised my raise before the flop.... he was trying to bluff me outta an A10 or QJs or such, he didn't know I had KK.. then the flop and kapow! he had me. the bets for turn and river weren't that huge cuz i figured he had AA and he just called me....and I had chips left, for the next bad beat......

So, now today... I think about poker alot, and I try to figure out how much value to put on Q8s depending on position and what happened with the bets and such afore it got to me....

I feel I'm a good player with still much to learn.

Hopefully I will keep this blog up to date and folks with frequent it with advice, suggestions and whatnot...

Peace
