5 high is good?!?

I didn't do all that well in the first tourny wednesday night.... did bettre in the second one... These are tournys sponsored by the Amatuer Poker League. They use a point system... I suppose the top point winners compete each month for a nice prize or sumtin.. I haven't actually read the fine print or anything....

So, the first tourney, started at 6 pm, and immediately, i feel awkward. We have, 5 different chip colors.... 10,20,100,500,1000. Way different than anything I am used to.. and not only that, there are very few 10's and 20's, only 1 500 and 2 1000.. majority being the 100's. Ok, no biggie... blinds start out 10 and 20, they go up on a regular schedule, only after the 1st level, each subsequent level goes up one minue earlier than the last... so, its like 15,14,13,12 break, then 10,9,8.

The first tourny, the deal made the orbit before each round.. which was nice.. the second tourny, we had some um, lets call them idiots... and the blinds were going up before a full orbit.. very frustrating..

So, the first tourney, I'm playing tight... too tight I come to learn latre... folded a pair of 5's to see a J5 win the pot with J high vs. 97s... neither on a blind... wow, i say to myself.. that is interesting.... so I stay tight and try to guage who the good players are vs. the , um not so good players.. and I pick out two players i really don't want to challenge early on... and try to stay out of there way.. this is working and i find myself stealing blinds from the others, and taking small pots with easy bluffs....but, nothing substantial....just enuff for another round or two, and the blinds go up... yada yada... things are starting to look grim..... even tho I am playing well...I'm just not getting enuff ammo for the second half.... then I get AKo....I'm first to act... the blinds had just gone up..a lil earlier and would prolly go up after this hand.. they are 200/400, would be a break before the next hand and blinds prolly at 500/1000... I have like 3000, raise the BB 600, making it 1000 to play...now, everyone folds.. and I am mainly after the blinds... SB folds, BB calls... Damn! I say... I immediately know my bet was not big enuff, or was it, or did it mattre... heh...flop is AQQ... gives me aces and queens... BB checks... I bet 500.. 'to see where I am at' he puts me all in before my 500 chip stops spinning.... I go to the tank for about .3 seconds, toss my cards in the muck while saying, 'your AQ is bettre than my AK'.. he flips over AQs and tells me... well played.... btw, he was one of the two I had determined a good player... me, i would have called my 500, prolly got me to go all in on the turn or river and took me out.... he said he hasn't had such a good hand in such a long time that it went to his head.. heh.. i can understand that.... I busted out after the break going all in with 99.... got beat by 82... i know.. they hit a 8 and a 2 on the board... was so so sad...ended up 25th or so outta 50 or so..no points.

second tourney.. i played alot looser in the beginning... took out some really clueless folks...ended up 11th..... 15 points... I got busted out going in with the 'almost best hand' vs 3 freaking callers... argh!! I was first to act.. AJs, BB was 2k, I had 6k, I go all in... call,call,call. and the 5th player at the table folded... leaving 4 in the pot.... I don't recall the details all that well, but, after the hole cards were flipped, it looked sumtin like this... Me AJs, Me+1 crap, Me+2 QQ, Me+3 crap with a 10.. Me+3 won with trip 10's, and he had everyone covered...

I know how they play now.... they like to take high cards to the river and middle and low pair even... my 5's will never be folded again.. that is for sure...

I'm falling for this lady.......cept, its more of a flying/floating sensations...
